Sandy Spring Friends School (Sandy Spring, MD)

Sandy Spring Friends School is delighted to present the third annual SBP Memorial Concert, held in honor and memory of Nan Schwarz Pricher '67 and Jane Schwarz Binger on Friday, May 12 at 7:15pm. This year's SBP Memorial Concert features Sonic Escape, founded by Shawn Wyckoff and Maria Kaneko Millar in 2009. Armed with flute & violin, their game plan—use hyper-instrumentals to fill hearts with indescribable joy—has landed them on hundreds of stages across 38 North American states, provinces and beyond! Maria and Shawn push themselves to the brink—singing, dancing, telling stories, and above all, playing their hearts out with a "wonderfully imaginative…anything goes sense of fun." (The Washington Post) Shawn and Maria have galvanized audiences at Lincoln Center, Chautauqua Institution, Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, The Gershwin Theatre on Broadway, and Carnegie Hall. Their workshops and residencies have empowered students from Iqaluit, Nunavut down to Montgomery, Alabama and even their alma mater, The Juilliard School. Sonic Escape's latest offering—Speak like the Star You Are—transforms decades of stage-tested chops into a motivational performance/talk on public speaking. No tickets necessary. For more information about the concert, please visit www.ssfs.org/events/SBP. Questions? Please contact Lauren Mossman, Director of Advancement, at lauren.mossman@ssfs.org or 301-774-7455, ext. 107.

Friends Wilderness Center (Harper’s Ferry, WV)

Throughout the ages people in various cultures have experienced the presence of God in nature. In the serenity of the forest of the Friends Wilderness Center, we will explore a few selections of persons who have recorded in poetry and prose their experiences with nature. Then after listening for the Spirit in the quiet of the trees, birds, and plants, we will record our insights and feelings in various kinds of writing, including reflective pieces and a dialogue with an object or element of nature. To participate, no one needs to be an experienced writer. We will simply see what emerges. Although there will be an opportunity to share with others what we write, no one should feel obligated to read. This program will be led by Caroline Pelton, a former member of the Friends Wilderness Board who has been leading similar programs for many years. Participants will meet at the Niles Cabin. Please plan to arrive between 9:40 and 9:50 to allow time for pre-program introductions, use of rest facilities, and stretching your legs after the drive. A delicious homemade lunch will be available for those who register ahead of time for a cost of $10. You are also free to bring your own food and beverage if you wish. As always, please let us know that you will be coming so that we can plan for the event. Contact Sheila Bach at snbach@earthlink.net or 304.728.4820 for more information, to register for this program, and to make reservation changes.

Sandy Spring Friends School (Sandy Spring, MD)

Our campus is in full bloom and we’re ready to “spring” into action to help families who are still looking for just the right school for their child next year or are getting a jump start on looking for 2018. We invite you to come and learn about our inquiry-based approach for children in Preschool (ages 3 and 4) – 12th Grade, and how we incorporate the natural beauty of our 140-acre campus in hands-on learning. Our Spring Open House will be held on Tuesday, May 16th. Registration and refreshments begin at 8:15AM, and the program which includes a campus tour and classroom visits will run from 8:45-11:00AM. Applications for 2017 are still being accepted on a rolling basis, and Admission Team members will gladly walk interested parents through the application process. If possible, we request that guests RSVP.
