Lancaster Friends Meeting (Lancaster, PA)

Lancaster Friends Meeting is delighted to announce that Philip Gulley, prominent Quaker writer and speaker, will present two talks at the Meeting House. His session at 9:30-11:30 on Saturday morning, September 13, will focus on his most recent book Living the Quaker Way. He will share practical wisdom about what it means to bear witness to our hope for a better world, as outgrowths of Quakers’ core testimonies. The session will include a significant opportunity for question and answer exchange with this thoughtful Quaker. On Sunday morning, from 8:45-9:45, Philip Gulley will share his current thoughts about “the awakened soul.” Lancaster Friends Meeting joyfully extends an invitation to all who would like to join us for either of these two free sessions with this witty and insightful Quaker. Guests attending the Sunday morning session are also invited, if they wish, to remain for Meeting for Worship at 10:00 and for a potluck meal following.

Friends Wilderness Center (Harpers Ferry, WV)

Beginning at 10:00 am, with a $10 lunch available. Come explore the origins and vision of the Rolling Ridge property and learn about its benefactors, Henry and Mary-Cushing Niles. Their granddaughter, Mary, who grew up visiting the land in every season, will share recollections of her grandparents, focusing on their spirituality and the inspiration behind Rolling Ridge. In addition, participants will be invited to reflect on the Niles Legacy through reflective and collaborative writing around the key theme of the restorative power of nature expressed in Wendell Berry’s oft-quoted poem, ‘The Peace of Wild Things.’ Mary will be reading excerpts about her grandparents and their relationship to the Rolling Ridge property from her recently published book, ‘Heart’s Oratorio: One Woman's Journey through Love, Death and Modern Medicine. Let Sheila Bach know if you plan on attending. (snbach@earthlink.net)

Stand Up For All People of the World and For Future Generations - Join the Quaker contingent at the People’s Climate March
On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 21, hundreds of thousands of people will take part in the People’s Climate March in Manhattan, including people of faith, environmental groups and many others – calling on world leaders to commit to a strong climate change treaty. Join Quaker Earthcare Witness and other Friends to march in the Quaker contingent. Go to quakerearthcare.org to read more and sign up to receive email updates.

Many buses will go to New York, some for the day only, and some on Friday and Saturday. For details on Friday or Saturday buses, contact Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light 202-709-7641. For buses up and back on 9/21, go to HoCo Climate Change at hococlimatechange.org (up and back on 9/21). Amtrak, Megabus, Boltbus and Greyhound also offer various choices for travel.

Best of all, there are a limited number of sleeping spots in three meetinghouses in Manhattan. New York Friends are opening their doors to Friends from around the country. These spots are limited and may be full, but it is best to get current information at the New York Yearly Meeting's website, nyym.org, where there is a link to sign up for hospitality.
