Claggett Center (Buckeystown, MD)

“The Plastic Brain,” will be a three-day conference with Margee Iddings as plenary speaker. Plenary sessions will explore what neuroscientists are learning about the brain and what neurotheologians are learning about “brain changers” that come from disciplined use of spiritual practices. Join us as we examine, explore, and experience how practicing ancient spiritual disciplines can actually improve the brain. Margee Iddings enjoys designing experiential ways of exploring complex subjects, and has shared these at the Washington National Cathedral, in various adult education programs in DC area churches, and with students in medical studies at George Washington University. You’ll also choose one of five interest groups that will meet during the conference: Parsing the Plenary; Mandala Art to Awaken the Spirit; Mantra Movement; The Initiatory Mysteries; and Poetry, Meditation, and Movement. For more information, including registration instructions, go to fcrp.quaker.org.

Then the Celo gathering just down the hall from 3 to 5 p.m. Ample free parking, direct bus and Metro service, plenty of places to eat within walking distance. William Penn House is hosting their first annual dinner honoring the Peacemakers in our midst. These are the people who do their work out of the limelight, simply following their own leading and proceeding as way opens. The inaugural honoree will be Mike Gray. For more than 30 years, Mike has been active in supporting the rights of native and indigenous communities from Mexico to the Bayou to South Dakota. His work may take the form of workcamp leader, activist, or advocate, but it is his fellowship and friendship that brings life to it all. Dinner will begin at 6:00 pm. More details are on the William Penn House website. (www.williampennhouse.org)
