Sandy Spring Friends School

Join a conversation with Phil Caroom (Annapolis), a Circuit Court Judge in Maryland since 1998, for a discussion of the issues of mass incarceration. Phil has a leading on this issue. He has begun work within the Maryland court system, and now is educating community groups about gaps, problems and promising alternatives for our criminal justice system. Pat Schenck (Annapolis), will describe the project among Friends to read and discuss The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Discussions about this book in Annapolis have brought about the creation of MAJR, the Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform, a group of individuals and nonprofit organizations now organizing a statewide initiative for legislation to fund changes in Maryland's criminal justice system, without raising taxes, which could simultaneously reduce incarceration and improve public safety. The conversation will begin at 12:45 in the Yarnall Hall Library.
