DC Detention Visitation Network Training

Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Sandy Spring, MD)

Erin Hustings, Network Coordinator, will orient us to the program and the immigration detention system. Several thousand people are held in immigration detention centers in at least six facilities in Maryland and Virginia. They are incarcerated in actual or virtual jails solely because they have been accused of or determined to be in the US without authorization. The DCDVN seeks to lessen the isolation and vulnerability of those detained by providing friendship and support. Many detainees never get visitors and have little connection to the world outside their prison. Volunteers simply visit detainees for 30-45 minutes and talk to them to let them know someone cares. To register for the training, contact Bette Hoover (202-329-4667 or bettehoover@icloud.com) or Erin Hustings (443-620-3380 or washingtonareadyn@gmail.com). The training will begin at 1:00pm and should conclude at 3:00. Childcare provided upon request. Light refreshments served.
