Quakers Say "No" To Cove Point

Sunday, July 13, 2014
Taft Memorial Park (Washington, DC)

Chesapeake Quarterly Meeting has discerned deep spiritual unity that the proposed Cove Point Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) international export facility for fracked gas must be stopped. The plant is located in Lusby, Maryland (near Patuxent Friends Meeting). In addition to significant local concerns, Cove Point will greatly increase the demand for fracked gas in the Mid-Atlantic states.

We ask that you join us for on Sunday, July 13, 2014 in Washington, DC, for a Meeting for Worship from 11:30 to 12:30 in Taft Memorial Park (next to the Bell Tower) North of the United States Capitol, on Constitution Avenue between New Jersey Avenue and First Street. Bring a blanket or chair. Rain Location for Worship: Friends Committee on National Legislation (245 Second Street, NE).

The Meeting for Worship is organized by Chesapeake Quarterly Meeting -- a coalition of 9 Friends (Quaker) Meetings in Central and Southern Maryland, including Patuxent Friends Meeting, which is adjacent to the proposed Cove Point Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility. Chesapeake Quarterly Meeting has reached unity that the expansion of the Cove Point LNG facility must be stopped. See the Quarter's minute here.

There will also be a rally and march from 1:00 to 4:00. Thousands are expected at this event organized by Chesapeake Climate Action Network. Starting location: West of the Capitol Reflecting Pool (bordered by 3rd St and between Pennsylvania Ave. NW and Maryland Ave. SW). You can download a flyer about the Meeting for Worship and Rally here. We ask that Friends post this and include the information about the Meeting and Rally in your newsletters and announcements. You can also obtain a fact sheet produced by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network that oulines the concerns regarding Cove Point here.

We'll come together to send a decisive message to President Obama and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission: Say “no!” to fracked gas exports at Cove Point and nationwide. The Cove Point plant poses serious safety risks to the Lusby, Maryland community, will result in increased demand for fracked gas from West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, significantly increase air pollution and worsen climate change.
