Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Ellicott City with Patapsco Friends
As part of the 250th anniversary and celebration of Ellicott City:
YOU ARE INVITED TO AN OPEN HOUSE AT HEBRON HOUSE BY THE PATAPSCO FRIENDS MEETING (QUAKERS)
2331 Calvin Circle, Ellicott City, MD
Sunday, March 20th, June 12th, and October 2nd
2:00pm - 4:00pm
Ellicott City, MD was started by Quakers: three Ellicott brothers, who came in 1771 from William Penn’s colony in Pennsylvania and chose a site on the Patapsco River for their flour mill. The Ellicotts helped build not just a Quaker meetinghouse but also houses of worship for other denominations. They founded schools not just for Quaker boys but also for girls and all children, including Native-Americans. They also helped recognize African-American Benjamin Banneker and invited him to help survey Washington, DC.

Two hundred years after the founding of Ellicott City, Friends once again felt led to start a Quaker meeting in Howard County, and soon Patapsco Friends Meeting found a home in the historic Hebron House. Come to one of the Open Houses and find out more about this history, and about Quaker beliefs and practices. All are welcome at no cost.

No previous study is expected or required. We just look at a few verses and discuss them following the Friendly Bible Study method developed by Joanne and Larry Spears:
https://universalistfriends.org/resources/quaker-universalist-friendlies

…but it’s not required to read that either.

Friendly Bible Study approaches the Bible with respect to the Quaker practice of finding insight through experience, continuing revelation, and honestly talking about problems. Our sessions are convened by Eli Courtwright, and me, John Allder Stephens, members of Alexandria MM.

Over the past year, we have come together as a learning team, and our discussions have produced deep connections and rich, meaningful reflections about life! We welcome young Friends 12 and up; and their adults who are willing to make space for young Friends to develop their own understandings.
