Friends Meeting of Washington (Washington, DC)

Our political system is broken. So many events and groups have forced us into unconnected silos so we no longer function as a community. Some were created out of a naïve sense of making strong communities by helping those with things in common to connect. Some were created with merely commercial interests. But some were created with malicious intent. Besides the purely political work that needs to be done, there is more: we must work to bring our country back to a broader consensus. We will never all agree on all things but we must get back to a place where we can work together. This workshop will explore interactively one path toward that goal of learning how to communicate better with people with whom we disagree. The program will begin at 7:00pm. Area Friends are welcome join Annapolis Friends Meeting (351 DuBois) this first day (Sunday, June 3) for Worship (11-12), potluck following, and to hear the CEO of the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy (https://icrd.org/) from 12:50 to 1:30. The International Center for Religion & Diplomacy is an organization that bridges religious considerations with the practice of international policy in support of peacebuilding. We focus our work on the role of religion and religious actors in transforming violent conflict, although we are not, ourselves, a religious organization. Our current work includes: training faith and community leaders on conflict resolution, countering violent extremism and reconciliation in Yemen, Pakistan, Colombia and Morocco; reforming education to improve tolerance and critical thinking skills in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia; and improving the engagement with conservative faith actors in reducing radicalization and prejudice in Tunisia, Morocco, Yemen, Pakistan, Spain, Indonesia, Kenya and the US.
